In order to protect consumers from fraud SEDD conducts Scales Campaign in Sharjah’s Markets

Sharjah Economic Development Department “SEDD” conducted a special campaign for scales in order to calibrate them in central markets and retail sale outlets. This campaign fall within SEDD’s plan to implement number of monitoring programs in the field of standards to protect consumers from fraud and manipulation of weighs as well as to raise awareness among the owners of these stores with the importance to committee to calibrating scales. The campaign is part of the MOU between SEDD and Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA), under which the Department carries out the activities of legal standards and market surveys in the Emirate of Sharjah. This MOU helps to enhance efforts, exchange experiences, and achieve the best performance in the public and private sectors in accordance with the best global practices applied. HE Sultan Abdullah bin Hadda Al Suwaidi, SEDD Chairman, said that the Department works on controlling markets in cooperation with all concerned parties in terms of sold products’ weight and measuring tools “Scales” in all sectors in order to preserve consumer rights. HE added that scales calibration is designed to ensure the safety of measuring instruments according to the mandatory requirements, in order to achieve the necessary protection for the consumer and support the national economy. In addition, HE emphasized that the launch of scales campaign comes within SEDD's concerns to intensify the activities related to legal standards and surveying markets thus to achieve the best performance in the public and private sectors according to the best international practices applied. From his side, Salem Al Suwaidi, Deputy Director of Commercial Control and Protection Department at SEDD, stated that the Department will organize number of campaigns to monitor commercial scales in all shops and commercial sectors in Sharjah. He said that such a thing falls within SEDD's roles to put an end to negative phenomena. He added that the Department conducts such campaigns periodically. In addition, number of intensified campaigns in order to highlight consumer protection and spread consumption awareness to the public. These campaigns aim to achieve balance in the markets by providing all forms of support and coordination with the concerned parties to protect the consumer and control the markets. Such things will enable the markets to play their vital role, ensure the safety, and enhance the comprehensive development. Also, he called all citizens and residents to report any case of violation by calling 80080000 or by placing the complaint in the consumer protection website www.shjconsumer.ae. Furthermore, Al Suwaidi said that the Department has conducted a series of intensive inspection campaigns on retail sale outlets and stores to ensure the accuracy of scales there. He added that SEDD will carry out more campaigns on commercial markets, which are aimed at matching these scales to the mandatory standards in UAE and standards adopted in this area within the department's plans, to ensure the metrological verification of legal measurement tools whereas all stores should apply UAE technical regulations for weights and scales. Al Suwaidi added that the number of scales verified during the period from March to September amounted to 437, where the number of scales that met the requirements hit 421 ones, while the Department rejected 16 scales which did not met the requirements. Moreover, he clarified that commercial scales should carry some specifications such as the existence of data label, two screens so that the customer can read the weight, SEDD’s inspection sticker that should be in green, whereas the stickers means that such scale is not suitable for usage, as well as other specifications.
