SEDD carries out 48,191 Inspection Campaign during 2021 Q2 with Growth of 288%

Sharjah Economic Development Department “SEDD” announced its full readiness to receive Eid Al Adha, stressing that it is working according to its plans to secure the emirate's markets through its control campaigns to ensure the safety of all economic practices. The campaigns held by the Department included all food service establishments, retail sales stores, , men's and women's salons, gold markets, in addition to all other economic establishments which activities are related to Eid season.

Commenting on that, Salim Al Suwaidi, Deputy Director of Commercial Control & Protection Department at SEDD, said that the Department carried out 48,191 inspection campaigns on various economic establishments in Sharjah during the second quarter of this year 2021. These campaigns reached a growth of 288% compared to the second quarter of last year. It should be noted that the Commercial Officers at SEDD work continuously according to studied plans to ensure the safety of all economic practices in the economic establishments at Sharjah. Also, SEDD intensified its role during the current period, with the aim of ensuring the compliance of establishments and addressing violators during Eid Al Adha.

On the other hand, Ali Fadil, Head of Commercial Protection Section at SEDD, indicated that the Department dealt during the past period with many different cases of consumer complaints, each of which was fully addressed in cooperation with all concerned parties, to reach a solution that satisfies everyone and preserves their rights.

In addition, SEDD handled 2,636 complaints received during the second quarter of this year 2021. According to the data issued, these complaints included consumer protection complaints forming the largest share of them with 2,363 complaints, followed by complaints from the service agent with 154 complaints, and then complaints of commercial fraud with 119 complaints.

Furthermore, consumer protection complaints were distributed to include many sectors. Complaints from the automotive sector and its spare parts reached 22% of the total consumer protection complaints received by SEDD, while complaints related to mobile phones and electronics hit 14%. Additionally, furniture and curtains complaints reached 12%, while complaints related to electrical appliances and building materials were 9%. Also, tourism, travel and shipping complaints amounted to 8%, while complaints of personal services activities hit 7%. It should be noted that other complaints were distributed unevenly among the various other economic sectors.

From his part, Rashid Al Hosani, Deputy Head of Commercial Control Section, stated that the number of inspection campaigns that SEDD conducted on Sharjah’s markets during 2021 second quarter reached 48,191 ones with a growth of 288% compared to the same period last year.

Also, the total number of licenses that were subjected to technical evaluation to ensure their compliance with the requirements and the areas specified for practicing some economic activities in the emirate reached 5379 ones compared to the second quarter of last year, with a growth of 144%.

Moreover, the data released by SEDD showed that the total number of scales that were calibrated reached 459, and the percentage of compatible and compliant scales was 94% of the total scales that were calibrated. In details, the number of commercial scales amounted to 376, with a matching rate of 95%, while the gold scales that were calibrated reached 83 scales, with a matching rate of 90%.

Also, Al Hosani pointed out that the Department is implementing a series of intensive inspection campaigns on sales outlets and shops to ensure the correctness and accuracy of the trade balances used in local markets. He added that SEDD aims to match these scales with UAE mandatory standards and specifications approved in this field within the Department's plans for metrological verification of legal measuring instruments and to ensure their conformity with UAE technical regulations on weights and scales.
